Fingerposts in West Sussex
West Sussex examples
West Sussex has many extant fingerposts. Their detailing is generally as follows:
- Round metal posts painted in black and white bands, with a bulge in the middle black band
- Posts topped with roundels, either:
- an old version with a hollow roundel with the initials WSCC (for West Sussex County Council, the highway authority) as in the photo below
- a new version with WSCC over the top and the village name at the bottom
- Wooden arms for destination names and mileage, with square ends, sometimes with scallops in the corners
- Mileage to the destinations are given to the nearest quarter mile.
