Came Down Golf Club
Came Down Golf Club
Came Down Golf Club is nearing its 110th anniversary, opening for play with nine holes on the 2nd March 1896. Originally known as the Dorchester Golf Club, following an extension to eighteen holes it was renamed the Weymouth, Dorchester and County Golf Club on 15th May 1906. It was renamed Came Down Golf Club in the 1920s and the new clubhouse was opened on 15th February 1964 [Came Down Golf Club 2005].
Its economic influence on the nearby village was faily rapid, as seen in father's occupations stated in the baptism registers. Henry Osmond is described as a 'Caretaker' (Aug 29th 1897) and 'Golf Ground Man' (Nov 1st 1898). This job seems to have passed to:
- Thomas Cuff - Golf Ground-Man (July 8th 1900)
- Ambrose Kirlew - Golf Ground-Man (May 31st 1903)
- Ambrose Kirlew - Golf Ground Keeper (Aug 21st 1904)
Ernest Robert Whitcombe was employed as a Golf Professional at the club and is noted as such on his marriage in 1913 and on the baptism entry for his daughter in 1921, when he is noted as living at 'The Bungalow, Higher Came'. His brother, Charles Albert Whitcombe was also a golf professional at the club and lived at Herringston when his daughter was born in 1921.
