Dorset County Council was set up following the Local Government Act of 1888. It has always been based in Dorchester. The County Council currently deals with education, social services, regional planning, highways and rights of way and archives (amongst other things).

'Linden Lea' is supposed to be William Barnes' most famous poem, and it is presmumed that the renaming reflects his connections with Winterborne Came.
District Council:
District Councils were set up following the Local Government Act 1894 and the Winterborne parishes were part of Dorchester Rural District Council (RDC). Following the 1972 Local Government Act, and in similarity to the rest of the country, Dorchester RDC was amalgamated with a collection of boroughs, urban district and rural district councils to form the much larger West Dorset District Council on the 1st April 1974. West Dorset District Council is also based in Dorchester and deals with local planning, car parks, council tax, tourism promotion and local museums (amongst other things).

Winterborne Farringdon Parish Council covers covers Bincombe, Whitcombe, Winterborne Came, Herringston & Monkton. The Council meets in February, May, August and November in Winterborne Monkton.
