Penwithen, a large house to the north of the village adjacent to the Weymouth Road, was bought by the County Council early in the twentieth century. It, along with the Rectory next door, has since been used as a school for children with special needs, but looks likely to be closing in the near future. Its pupils are to be transferred into mainstream schools.
