WINTERBORNE HERRINGSTON (or Winterborne Herringstone) is a parish 1½ miles south-by-west of Dorchester stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the Southern Division of the County, Culliford Tree hundred, Dorchester union and county court district. It is ecclesiastically incorporated with Winterborne Came but separate as regards civil matters. By an order of the County Council, in pursuance of the "Local Government Act 1895," a portion of the parish of Fordington was added to this parish for civil purposes. Herringston, the seat of Capt. Berkeley Cole Wilmot Williams, J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner, is situated in a vale surrounded by a finely-wooded park of about 500 acres. The soil is gravel; subsoil, chalk. The area is 587 acres; rateable value £1,032; the population in 1911 was 76.

By Local Government Order No. 31,962, part of the rural portion of Fordington civil parish was added to Winterborne Herringston, and by Order 1,546, dated 9th November 1900, part of Winterborne Herringston civil parish was annexed to Dorchester All Saints.
